About The Region

Our château is in a small residentail village called Tharoiseau, in the tourism region of Yonne, which is in the Northwestern part of Bourgogne (Burgundy). The closest village with shops is Vézelay, which is named as the #1 most beautiful village in Burgundy!

Burgundy is of course a famous wine region, more on that below.

In addition to wine, we are on the northern edge of the Morvan Regional Park which is home to outdoor activities and summer festivals. There are many beautiful villages to explore, and Dijon is a 1.5hr drive from the château. There are also a few archaeology sites to explore in the region, including Gallo-Roman sites and a Paleolithic Cave with paintings!

It is possible to rent bikes at the tourism office in Vézelay. We can help coordinate bikes as the trip gets closer.

Closest Regions:

  • Vézelay AOC: The château itself houses Sainte Madeleine, a winemaking operation established by the owners in 2020. Also in Tharoiseau (5 minute walk from our front door) is Domaine La Croix Montjoie. See here and here for reviews of the appelation.

  • Chablis: 45 minutes north is the famous Chablis region. Known for dry, unoaked chardonnay with high minerality, some of the oldest winemakers in France are in this region (the first vines were planted here in 1AD)! See here and here for guides to the region.

Nearby:

  • Heading south from Dijon are the other 4 primary wine regions of Burgundy: Côte de Nuits, Côte de Beaune, Côte Chalonnaise, Mâconnais. The closest one is a 1.5 hr drive.

  • Just over an hour west is Pouilly-Fume and Sancerre, renowned Sauvignon Blanc regions.
